Bonus Offers for Transferring Points or Buying Miles

Everyone loves a bonus! Banks and airline partnerships occasionally have promotions offering a bonus when you transfer credit card points to airline miles. Likewise, the airlines themselves sometimes offer bonuses or discounts when buying miles. We’ve compiled the best of the current promotions for transferring points or buying miles.

Current Promotions to Buy Miles or Transfer Points with a Bonus

These deals are always coming and going and some airlines have them more often than others. In either case, we advise to only transfer points or purchase airline miles when you have an immediate use with available award space or an impending booking in the near future. Once points are transferred to airline miles, they cannot be transferred back to the bank. And purchasing miles should generally only be done to top up a balance for a redemption.

Here are some of the promotions currently on offer for transferring points or buying miles.

This is a great deal if you need to top up a balance to book flights through Air France/KLM Flying Blue. We've been seeing some great availability for good rates to Europe lately. And since you can transfer all major credit card points currencies to Flying Blue, it should be easy to piece together enough points and top up with purchased miles for a flight redemption.

In other words, you’ll only need to transfer 55,000 American Express Membership Rewards points to receive 63,000 Avianca LifeMiles for a one-way flight in Business Class to Europe!

Copa ConnectMiles

Up to 50% bonus when you buy 3,000 or more miles

  • 20% bonus when you buy 3,000 – 9,000 miles
  • 30% bonus when you buy 10,000 – 19,000 miles
  • 40% bonus when you buy 20,000 – 29,000 miles
  • 50% bonus when you buy 30,000 – 100,000 miles

This offer expires at 11:59 pm Eastern Time, on June 4, 2021.

Unless you happen to currently have Copa ConnectMiles, this promotion may not do you much good. Nonetheless, if there is a redemption available that you’re a few miles short of, this bonus could help out.

Marriott Bonvoy Points

40% bonus when transferring Amex points to Marriott points

  • 1000 American Express Membership Rewards = 1,400 Marriott Bonvoy Points
  • Marriott Bonvoy Points transfer to several airline programs at a 3:1 ratio
  • May be a targeted offer for certain members

This offer expires on June 15, 2021.

For the most part, your Amex points are much more valuable when transferred directly to airline miles. However, this promotion can be somewhat valuable if you only need to top up your Marriott balance for a hotel redemption or to transfer along to airline miles if you just need a few more miles for a high-value redemption.

TAP Air Portugal Miles&Go

5,000 bonus miles when you transfer your first 5,000 Capital One points

  • Minimum of 5,000 miles on your first transfer to receive bonus
  • Only one bonus per account is allowed
  • Bonus miles will be credited to TAP Miles&Go account within 7 working days

This offer expires on May 31, 2021.

TAP Air Portugal and Capital One Venture Rewards are kicking off their relatively new partnership with this 5k bonus. TAP Air Portugal Miles&Go doesn’t have too many opportunities for redemptions that you can’t find with better options through other programs such as Avianca LifeMiles, but one decent redemption is for Star Alliance flights to South America for 50,000 miles one-way in Business Class.

Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards

Up to 75% bonus when you buy 5,000 points or more

  • 65% bonus when you buy 3,000 – 9,000 points
  • 70% bonus when you buy 10,000 – 14,000 points
  • 75% bonus when you buy 15,000+ points

This offer expires at 11:59 pm Central Time, on May 28, 2021.

Since Southwest Rapid Rewards is a revenue-based rewards program, it will rarely make sense to buy points for a redemption. Use this primarily if you need to top up a current balance for a redemption. Otherwise, it usually makes more sense to just book with cash. However, it can be beneficial to have a small stash of Rapid Rewards points to book flexible travel plans since flights booked with Southwest points are completely refundable rather than just receiving a travel credit when booking with cash.

United MileagePlus

Up to 85% bonus when you buy 5,000 miles or more

  • 30% bonus when you buy 5,000 – 14,000 miles
  • 50% bonus when you buy 15,000 – 39,000 miles
  • 75-85% bonus when you buy 40,000 – 100,000 miles

This offer expires at 11:59 pm Central Time, on May 25, 2021.

There is a 175,000-mile limit per calendar year on purchased miles, which includes bonus miles. Standard accounts will top out at a 75% bonus, while some targeted accounts may receive up to an 85% bonus when purchasing 40k or more miles. While the high bonus seems enticing, it’s only recommended to purchase miles if you have a specific use in mind and need to top up your current balance in order to redeem.
